DAY 1 Guatemala 2026

Image
DAY 1   I left   on a snowy Friday evening ,  Jan 29. Two layovers and an overnight in an airport hotel later, I arrived in Guatemala City. I was a teeny bit concerned that my checked bag full of donations including vitamins and OTC meds-and my OR scrubs and shoes-might not make it through customs, but I think the custom's official just wanted me to go away! She took my declaration page, never looked at it, and pointed to the exit sign. I wanted to use my new language and thank her but my version of “Gracias” might sound more like “Grassy ass” sooo… I nodded, took my win and my bag and  looked for some fair-skinned folk speaking English outside.           help?                                                                                  ...

true story..  the first night in Guatemala, I fell asleep trying to figure out why Blog would not open or respond on the iPad.  Glasses were on and headlamp in hand. End of story. 🤓-😴    ..I REALLY   did  want to share.  I woke up the following morning 4:30--glasses askew and headlamp somewhere under the covers. I glared at this high-tech device with furled eyebrows. Y'all know Apple thought we needed an update recently... A MAJOR update! Apparently my iPad had missed that...    End of this short story:  I gave up on blogging after a few days. I was so full of story every night, though too tired to write. Now, at home embalmed in a CNY  real winter, I will endeavor to share my memories and heart..  in print. I genuinely do not know where to start… This is my 6th surgical mission trip. I've been to some pretty desperate, poverty-stricken countries.  And now...    Guatemala is added to that list, and no less s...

all I can say is...  WHAT A TREMENDOUS EXPERIENCE!!!  I can't write tonight. I'm sooo tired..  but hopefully tomorrow..  I wish for you all to one day be a part of a mission that serves the "nobodies", the forgotten, the poor, the children...   I   ..am  the receiver in this business of caring, this bridge-building between the haves and have-nots..    and always...   a l w a y s..   I come away filled and overflowing with renewed energy, deeper compassion, a hunger for more..   the one who has received the greatest blessing - a changed heart.  I'll upload a one photo. I spent too much of the 41/2 hr ride enjoying a conversation with my beautiful new friend, Brooklyn, to keep an eye out for the real Guatemala..  but that will come.. Love at first sight...   my new favorite country ☺️ from a bird's eye view (a big metal bird with AA on its tail!) ...a nd somewhere in those mountains is a little town...  and ...

A couple thoughts…  Sue and I had a rest yesterday. We are more better today, able to walk without too much discomfort and we are  anxious to be back on the trail. But secondly…. because we didn’t hike yesterday, I didn’t really have any examples of  FnF . (Flora and fauna, people!) I mentioned I would include some at the start of each post, so… here we go!                         *   There are MANY Hydrangae bushes on the Island—true “show-stoppers”! But I think my fav is Pennymac, the farthest right. * Here are some other interesting finds                        Loosestrife           Honeysuckle         Ice plant                           Spruce—magnificent example!              ...
