Day 5: Cahersiveen to Waterville - by bus
Today I was a little sad…. My left knee was not well; every step was painful in addition to sore toes— but I have 10 toes and only 2 knees! I could decommission a couple toes; I CANNOT afford to have a knee give up…. so I did not hike today to let it rest 😔, but it was because I have a wise friend, Sue.
. . . Sue decided she needed a rest day first (!) and my stubborn self knew she was right. We took a bus to our next seaside stop—Waterville. . . a very good plan.
Here are a few glimpses into our interesting day…
Cahersiveen
…………
We walked (one of us hobbled) from our lodging through the town to the bus station, about a mile. Along the way we meandered into Querck’s store.. Colman Querck was the long time owner. His employee, Ife - pronounced “Eefey”- was working the register and adept at every task it seemed. This is Ife:
She came to Ireland and volunteered for 6 months in Colman’s store. She learned all manner of his business, computer, bookkeeping, cleaning and community. She has applied for residency and is waiting to receive the document. Colman has since hired her and has put her in charge of the shop.
Their arrangement was a win-win!
During the conversation about her home country, I mentioned my daughter in Togo. . .
Kelcey. . .
And Ife delighted in talking with me about Africa.
…………
This little walkway was near Quercks. Granted, it is unassuming.
However, its walls were lined with wisdom. This particular truism made me chuckle…. and think… and yes,
my hinges might need some oil, but..
my 66 yo soul has NO REGRETS
because
NOW is the time
to see the world
step by step
Meanwhile…..
Our hikers.
I was with them in spirit. . .
…………
Some pics of our new town on the Ballinskelligs Bay. Ballinskellig means “town of the craggy rock” .The craggy rock is Skellig Michael. Any StarWars fans reading this? I’ll circle back around to this in the next post.
Waterville was Charlie Chaplin’s favorite
hideaway…
One last little tidbit….
This town -so small, no industry, few places to eat or sleep
is a HOT HOT SPOT for GOLFING!!
On our way out (the following day) we saw a helicopter- coming in to land. I assumed it was medical transport. Silly me… it was a private flight delivering some golf buff from another country to play The Links at Waterville or Hogshead! Apparently, this is “normal”. The beauty of it—the many employment opportunities offered to the town.
One very last little tidbit…
The people who own this house also own their own private 2 hole practice course! . . and there isn’t even a Wegmans here
(We were told it belonged to Americans 😳)
I canNOT tell you what time it is
Good night!
